How it works
From the initial description to documented handover—and what applies along the way.
How it works
From initial description to completed project
Four steps. You only need to take the first one.
- 01
Tell us what you want to accomplish
Describe the problem, project, or goal in your own words. You do not need a finished specification.
An email or conversation about what is not working is enough: a product to take further, a process that takes too long, or information needed for a decision. We will ask follow-up questions about goals, constraints, and timeline.
- 02
We define the scope
Together, we define the purpose, deliverable, scope, and timeline to make the assignment achievable.
You do not need to know which expertise you are looking for. We draft an assignment brief covering purpose, deliverable, and scope, and provide a proposed approach and timeline before anything starts.
- 03
We find the right student consultant
We match the assignment with expertise from KTH — an individual consultant or a team. Available expertise is assessed case by case.
Real-world problems rarely follow disciplinary boundaries, so teams can be formed across schools. You will have a dedicated contact person throughout the assignment.
- 04
The project is completed and handed over
Consultants work toward agreed milestones with regular check-ins, and the assignment concludes with a documented deliverable.
Check-ins let you adjust direction along the way. The deliverable — code, prototype, analysis, or decision-making material — is handed over with documentation so you can continue working internally.

Which projects are a good fit—and which aren’t?
Student consultants work best on tasks that are well-defined, knowledge-intensive and time-limited: preliminary studies, analyses, prototypes, mappings and technical assessments. These projects have a natural endpoint and a clear deliverable.
Projects requiring 24/7 availability, long-term maintenance commitments or responsibility for safety-critical operations are less suitable. Consultants study alongside their work, and exam periods affect availability.
Changes during the project
Circumstances change. The scope can be adjusted within the timeframe during check-ins; if the deliverable needs to change substantially, we revise the project description together before work continues.
Handover
The project concludes with a documented deliverable—code, prototype, model, report or decision-making basis—along with a walkthrough so you can continue the work internally.
Questions we discuss in the call
This varies depending on the project’s scope and content, so we’ll go through these points with you directly and include what you agree on in the project description.
